Wood vs. Plastic Boomerangs: Which Material Fits Your Brand?

06/18/2026

The single biggest decision on any boomerang order isn’t the size or the shape — it’s the material. Wood and plastic sit at opposite ends of the range on price, feel, and design freedom, and most programs only need to answer a few questions to know which one is right.

Neither is objectively better. The right choice depends on your budget per unit, how the boomerang needs to feel in the hand, and whether your design relies on full color.

What a wooden boomerang does best

Baltic birch and bamboo boomerangs read as premium the instant someone picks one up. The material has warmth, a laser-engraved logo is burned into the grain rather than stuck on top, and a real wooden boomerang is the kind of thing people keep and display. That makes it ideal for corporate gifts, tourism keepsakes, and any program where the boomerang is a lasting brand impression, not a throwaway.

What a plastic boomerang does best

Full-color and ABS plastic boomerangs are the affordable, high-visibility workhorses. Plastic prints edge-to-edge in unlimited CMYK, so multi-color logos, mascots, gradients, and custom colors are all on the table, and it shrugs off damp grass and hard landings. At a fraction of the per-unit cost of wood, it’s the material for trade-show giveaways, festivals, sports teams, and any run measured on impressions per dollar.

Cost and quantity differences

Wood runs roughly $3.50–$10.00 per unit depending on birch vs. bamboo and decoration; plastic runs roughly $2.50–$6.00, and foam or mini styles less. On a 1,000-unit order that gap is real money, so the honest question is whether the audience and occasion justify the premium feel — an executive gift, yes; a festival giveaway, probably not.

Matching material to audience

As a rule of thumb: wood for a discerning, smaller, keepsake-worthy audience; plastic for a broad, color-driven, budget-sensitive giveaway. Many programs order both — engraved wood for VIPs and printed plastic for everyone else — and combine the volume to improve pricing on the whole order.

Key takeawayChoose wood when the boomerang is a keepsake for a discerning audience; choose plastic when it’s a colorful, high-volume giveaway measured on impressions per dollar.
